Travel has taught me to plan well and always have at least a plan B; it encouraged adaptability, patience, savoring the moment, and determination; it created The Optimistic Tourist, me. I have a degree in Recreation and credentials in both elementary and secondary education from the University of the Pacific. From my earliest memory, I have always loved to travel. The means of travel and the location were matched by the many things I learned along the way. Travel has educated my children and grandchildren, also. Throughout my teaching career, I never hesitated supplying materials and techniques for parents to educate while traveling. Wanting to share the joys of travel, created the travel advisor-consultant that I am today.

United Kingdom, England Travel Agent Concierge

Cornwall is the county of the most southern part of the U.K.where a lot of families  vacation here in the summer.   Fans of Martin Clunes arrive in the early spring to watch the filming of the TV show Doc Martin and sometimes become part of the show. For some pictures and other information about Cornwall, check out my story.

PS. You can catch the train from Paddington Station in London to access Cornwall and the ride is beautiful--no matter the season.

Speciality: Adventure & Destinations for All Ages

I have always wanted to travel.  The journey was just as important as the destination.  Seeing new things, meeting new people, and having new experiences was a treat.  I never envisioned I would get too far from home.  Little did I know my future when I took my first solo trip to Hawaii at 20.

Since my travel adventure started, I have been across the USA many times and love each new place I find myself. History is so much easier to understand when you are on site.  I have learned that there is much more to the USA than just two coasts and the people are warm and friendly.

Besides home, I have been to Europe, Asia, Africa, India, China, Japan, Korea, Australia, and my long time goal of Bora Bora --long story there.  I have been fortunate and sailed from New Orleans to Singapore and Syndey to Honolulu.  My sailings have also taken me from Vancouver, B.C. to Yokohama, Japan.

I have been on numerous additional sailings and cruise lines, on European river cruises, and a Mississippi River cruise, also.   I can even say I have been in a giant canoe on the upper Amazon River.  The California Delta is my backyard and playground.

My adventures and travels have gone from simple to very luxurious and a great number in between. It is amazing how many experiences can be packed into 50+ years of adventure.

I believe my experiences can assist you  in making reality of  your vision and goals. Drop me a line, call, or text so we can start planning that dream.

Single Parent Travel Agent Specialist

What do you do?  You are now a single parent who is co-parenting with your former spouse.  You had great plans of sharing so many things with your child/children when you were a couple; does that dream have to end?  ABSOLUTELY NO!!!

You need to keep in mind that your special times with your child/children is to build your relationship, share experiences, have fun, and educate.  This is not a time for one parent to try to out do the other.  Parenting in not a competition.  Each parent, most likely, has a special type of vacation he/she enjoys and wants to share.  That special vacation/holiday period with your child is a time to share your favorites,--from food, to entertainment, music, activities,  and for you to get to know. your child/children.How do you start?

Do you have time to make all of the plans so your vacation goes off without a hitch?  Good research and planning takes time and patience to have all of the travel elements come together  and appear easy.  Do you have hotels, cruise lines, theme parks, train and plane schedules readily available?  Do you know the locale or have a contact to guide you through unknown locations?

If you work a full time job and have a life away from your place of employment, you probably do not have the time it takes to develop an itinerary in detail, study the locales you are considering, contacting in country persons, make all reservations and dealing with deviations from the set itinerary.

Your travel consultant will free your time so you do not have to clutter your life with trip planning.  In your consultation, you will discuss ages of the participants, physical limits--if any, fears, likes,  activity level, music, entertainment, favorite books, movies, and video games; in other words, get to know the child/children and parent.

Trip suggestions can range from an itinerary of camping, hiking, rock climbing, to visiting holiday markets, theme parks (in various countries), cruise ships, and more. Co-parenting  is when I introduced my own children to the joys of education through travel which they have passed along to their own children.

When you need to plan a child/teen centered trip or adventure, remember to call me, Marian, The Optimistic Tourist.

Cruise Travel Agent Expert

I have been on many cruises, many cruise lines, and have manage to make it  around the world by ship.   I love cruises and I can help you with your cruises  to any where or to nowhere.  Yes they do exist.

Favorite cruises are repositioning cruises.  The #1 reason for loving cruises is they provide transportation from one place to another with sights and stops, congenial guests, good food, and fun along the way.  Cruises are my vacation before my vacation.  We get all of the amenities of a great resort and arrive at our next destination rested and ready to explore.  The shortest repositioning has been 3 nights while the longest, thus far, has been 42 nights.

Once on the ships, it is easy to forget you are on a ship.  The movement is limited and you do not have to look at the water.  Just ask and I can tell you how it is done.

Roatan Adventure & Relaxation Travel Agent Advisor

I love the Roatan and think it is necessary to set something straight before you continue with your plans to visit. If it is not a match, you might not experience the same love for the island life as I have. There are many misconceptions about going to Roatan.Staying on Roatan is not the same as watching a home search on a cable network. The TV show is staged to make everything look great. Why would you watch if it were not a showing of the best view? Do you really want to look at a litter scatter stream removing waste water?Everyone loves great views of the glistening blue Caribbean.1. Roatan is not a cheap place to go. Honduras is a 3rd world country, BUT Roatan is a world famous star. Getting to the island pricey. The most budget friendly places are generally reserved a year or more out and not the style resorts found in the Caribbean Mexico,Dominican Republic, or other Caribbean resort areas. Roatan is an island in a 3rd world country and maintains the customs and style of the native population. Do Not have USA expectation, customs, or standards. You will be out of the laws and expectations of your home country. Be polite and enjoy learning about how other people live.2. Transportation costs are dynamic. The more demand, the higher the price goes up. Third party booking companies are not always dependable (fine print).3. Matching reservations that are appropriate for families, couples, and individuals takes a great deal of time. No one wants to be miserable on holiday, so this is extremely important.4. I do charge a fee when dealing with Roatan because of the intense work it takes to coordinate vision to completion. There have just been too many shoppers and ghosts for this particular area. I am one of the few Roatan experts that has actually lived on island with current contacts.A Quick overview of Roatan—very quick.Roatan is the largest of the Honduran Bay Islands, off the North coast of the mainland of Honduras. The official language is Spanish, but many languages are spoken.Prior to annexation, Roatan had been occupied by British pirates, ancestors of survivors of slave ships gong to St. Vincent (the Garifuna), and various expats, escapees, and a collection of unique individuals seeking a new life. Prior to annexation, the main language was English. Many of the families have inter-married and you never now who is related to whom. Great story lines.Electricity full time came to Roatan around 1993 with the building of the RECO generation plant. Communication was done by CB and then very expensive and lines. With the dawn of the cell phone, almost everyone is connected to the outside via internet, internet, and cable.Roatan was mostly a destination for scuba divers and sports fishermen until 2008 when the ship dock at Coxen Hole was remodeled and cruise ships started making regular stope. In2010, Carnival Corporation built Mahogany Bay with its own docks, beaches, restaurants, etc.(an exclusive island experience) for its fleet including Princess, Holland American, Carnival, and Costa to name a few. AS they say, “Build it and they will come”Many changes have happened on Roatan since we first stepped foot on Roatan in December of 1993. We knew if some place was so. beautiful on a rainy day, it use be great in the sun.Cost:Roatan is an island and everything that is not grown on the island must be shipped in.Roatan’s beauty and experience opportunities have become well known and very popular. Many visitors are returnees from the cruise ship experiences. All this said, Roatan is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. We returned 3 times per year (at least 2 months) from 1993 until 2019, when we sold our property. Why did we keep going back? The people are very friendly, caring, and kind. Plus, there is nothing like a Roatan sunset.

River Cruise Travel Agent Specialist

Being a boater at heart and living in the California Delta, it is always a pleasure to get  on any river boat and enjoy the relaxed pace and scenery.  Over the years, I have been fortunate to travel on the Danube, Rhine, and Rhone Rivers. Each castle and village was pure eye-candy and a delight.

My most recent commercial riverboat travel was up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Memphis. The cruise was on a small paddle wheeler, the American Duchess, and only about 50% capacity.  It was all-inclusive--Food, beverages, entertainment, and tours!

Since everyone was vaccinated and tested prior to boarding, we actually got to see the faces of other travelers and staff.  The staff kept the boat pristine for the entire voyage.  Everyone felt totally safe.

Destination talks, period talks, and shows made all of the travelers more informed about what we were about to see and experience.

I highly recommend river cruises in the US and around the world.

Moorea Travel Agent Specialist

As a child, I always loved stories about people in far away places.  One particular story was of a girl who lived on an island in the Pacific Ocean.  The descriptions were so vivid I could see them in my mind.  I told my teacher that I wanted to go to that island some day.

My teacher responded, "In your dreams, dear.  It doesn't exist."

Shocked, I went home and told my parents that the beautiful island from my story, Bora Bora, did not exist.  My very wise father suggested we check it out in the encyclopedia and see.

Much to my surprise, there was such a place!  I went to school and shared my new found information with the teacher and even showed her where it was on the world map.  My research did not gander any favor from the teacher, but I had a new goal.

It took me more time than I choose to admit, but I did make it to Bora Bora, Moorea, and Tahiti via cruise ship several years ago.  Such beauty was worth the wait!

Hope to return some day; in the interim, I will visit as many islands as possible.

Make sure you see the swim with sharks video.

Petra Travel Agent Expert

Never in my wildest of day dreams would I ever dream  about being on a 42 day cruise, being an adventurer or being up close and personal with history.  When I watched all of the Indiana Jones movies, I thought "That's nice,"  and dismissed the idea.

Newly retired from my full time gig, I would check out all of the cruises and other trips I spotted on line.    I was hunting for just the right new place to see and at the right cost.  When I spotted a cruise ad that said 3 continents in 15 days--interesting, I thought.  Dear husband asked where it went after those 15 days and found there were 13 more ending in Singapore.  THEN, he asked about where the trip originated.

Well,  the trip started in New Orleans traveled to Europe, stopped in Egypt, passed through the Suez Canal, Red Sea, to Dubai with stops at Goa and Cochin, India before Malaysia and ending in Singapore. 42 days on a ship?

After leaving Alexandria and while passing through the Suez Canal, we stopped at Aqaba.  Our contingent boarded a luxury motor coach to take us past Wadi Rum and on to Petra.

Our reserved cart and driver were waiting as we disembarked from the coach.  Though our skills were limited, we did understand when the driver indicated we should hold on tight.

The cart whizzed through centuries old narrow path ways between gigantic rocks and past terrified pedestrians.  It was hard to distinguish who was more scared--pedestrians or passengers.

As we exited the narrow passageway, we saw it!  The Treasury was directly in front of us. At that moment in time, we understood.

Maui Travel Agent Expert

As your Maui travel agent advisor, I can plan your dream holiday to the beautiful island of Maui.   Indeed, Maui is a stunning piece of paradise. Its wide array of travel attractions is sure to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. From its massive waterfalls, snorkeling sites, and world-class golf courses to its unspoiled beaches, Maui offers a wonderful travel experience.  Whether you're looking for a relaxing day trip or an adventurous hiking excursion, you'll find plenty of options to keep you entertained. Here are some of the top travel attractions in Maui. The Road to Hana is a must for any traveler. This winding road leads visitors along a stunning coastline, passing lush jungles, breathtaking waterfalls, and remote villages. Make sure to bring a good camera and plan to spend a few hours in each of the many picturesque spots along the way.. Haleakala National Park is a great destination for those who want to explore the outdoors. You can immerse yourself in stunning scenery and take part in a variety of activities such as biking, hiking, and camping. The park is also home to the famous Haleakala Volcano, which offers impressive views, and also is an impressive landmark. Also called the East Maui Volcano, Haleakala is a large shield volcano. It forms three-fourths of Maui. The west side of Maui has been created by the Mauna Kahalawai volcano, also called the West Maui Mountain. The tallest point of Haleakala is called Pu’u Ula’ula. It is 10,023 feet in height. A shield volcano like Haleakala is normally not explosive if it erupts. Therefore, volcanoes of this type do not pose a risk if they are not situated in rift zones. Insead of exploding, the volcano releases a stream of lava that creates spatter and cinder cones. When visiting Maui and the beach, I advise a visit to Ka’anapali Beach. Here you can experience the exceptional beauty of Maui and engage in a variety of activities, including snorkeling, parasailing, and watching the sunsets. Of course, you don’t have to confine all your beach activities to one beach. You’ll also want to visit Olowalu, Hamoa Beach, Kapalua Bay, Honolua Bay, and Wai’anapanapa State Park. You can also enjoy water fun at Baldwin Beach Park. Maui indeed makes for one spectacular beach holiday. Maui also offers plenty of shopping and dining options to enjoy. The bustling cities of Lahaina and Kihei offer a wide selection of restaurants and shops. Whether you're looking for souvenirs or a delicious bite to eat, you'll never be at a loss for things to do. As your travel agent professional, I can guarantee that you’ll find all that you’re seeking in a Maui getaway. Given the warm climate and plethora of attractions, you’ll never want to leave. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, Maui will provide the travel solution. Below are some travel activities and sites you’ll want to include in your Maui travel plans. The Road to Hana is an incredible scenic drive that offers sweeping views of the island's jungle and coastline. This winding road is full of stops and attractions, including waterfalls, hikes, and roadside stands. The town of Hana itself is a beautiful, traditional Hawaiian settlement with a rich culture and plenty of activities. Oheo Gulch, commonly known as the Seven Sacred Pools, is one of the most gorgeous natural attractions on the island. The peaceful pools are formed by a series of waterfalls, providing the perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, and cliff diving. The Haleakala National Park is home to the massive Haleakala Volcano. Here you can take guided tours, explore the park's humid rainforests, and even hike to the summit for a stunning view of the island's landscape. Maui is full of captivating attractions - from ocean adventures, to jungle hikes, to cultural experiences. Its picturesque beaches make you feel like you’ve landed in a paradise - a magical place reflective of another time.  Also, you’ll want to visit the Iao Valley State Park, a definite must-see. It's home to the iconic Iao Needle, a towering volcanic plug that rises over 1,200 feet above the ground. Hike through the valley, explore the rainforest, or take in beautiful views of the Iao River. The Iao Valley was designated a national natural landmark in 1972. Next, take some time to relax on the beaches of Maui. I recommend Ka'anapali Beach, as it is noted for its clear turquoise waters and white sand. It's the perfect spot for swimming, scuba diving, and sunbathing. Snorkelers will also want to check out the Molokini Crater, a partially submerged volcanic crater that is now home to a variety of marine life. It's a great spot for getting up close and personal with Hawaii's vibrant sea creatures. As you can see, there are plenty of excellent reasons for visiting Maui. Therefore, I look forward to working with you as your Maui travel agent professional. Give me a call today so we can start planning your Maui holiday.

It’s time to cruise! Wave season is here.

Wave season is the big cruise sale of the new year.  It is a time when companies offer some of the deals of the year.  Suppliers offering deals are not just the big mass sales lines.

There are many boutique cruise lines that offer a more large yacht style opportunity.  These smaller lines are able to travel to locations that are more remote as well as the standard routes.  In some of the warm water destinations, they will have water toys that they provide while anchored out and have beach parties.  One even has a butler serving caviar and champagne.  Remember this is a sales time and what might seem out of reach can be very affordable without 5000 other cruisers.  Want cold water adventures?  Some of the small ships also cruise in Alaska and go from island to island with adventure along the way.

Wanting to see land up-close.  You can do that on a river cruise.  River cruises are not limited to Europe.  There are river cruises around the world.  Stay close to home and cruise on the  rivers of the USA.

Let's talk about what your interests and how you can be matched with the perfect cruise for you.  Larger ship full of activities to small boats, there is a cruise for everyone.  Stop the wait and contact me now.

Slowing Down? : Must the Travel Party end?

The two questions in the title of this brief article ae ones that one asks as they age.  On the group tour, have you found yourself moving back in the pack instead of being the leader?  Do you need to take breaks frequently or make excuses like that pebble in your shoe?  You are not alone if this has a tinge of what you have been growing to through the years.

I used to keep adding things into my already full itinerary just because we were that close.  Travel and all o f the wonderful things to see and gather in my visual and sensory memory resembled a greedy child in a candy shop.

Ages and stages have caused me to slow down.  If I want to still travel and experience the intermingling with others and continue to learn, I had to change.  I am no longer looking for the tallest peak or other challenges.  I feel fortunate to be able to still get around and have become The Grateful Explorer.

I will be working to find other travelers who would like to travel in a more relaxed, savoring the moment, taking time lingering and at a gentler pace.

Join The Grateful Explorer on Facebook and add your thought of places you would like to visit at that gentler pace and mode.  I am already dreaming of watching any beautiful sunsets.  Come along and make destination suggestions, too.

Expert Optimist; Making "I CAN" out of cancer

Where to start with something so personal? It has been me to be private about my own life regarding all things except travel. Separation between business and home have worked well, but this peek may give others some hope.

Almost two years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer.  It was a shock since the worst thing I ever had was measles before I was two.  After all the tests, cancer board meetings, and waiting, the course of action was decided.

After a but of conversation with my wonderful husband,  I went along with what the panel of experts decided.  First would be chemo for three months, a two week break, and again 3 more months of chemo. The thought of just this part of the treatment plan left me in a daze.

Plans were in place to meet with our sons and their families in Mexico for New Years and I thought that was off the table but did nothing to cancel.  We had trip insurance and needed time to think about a back-up plan.  Does cancer give you an alternative?

Wednesday morning came and I went to my first chemo and met "big red" as well as other "wonderful" chemicals they were injecting via my new port. On the next Wednesday, I met with the doctor to talk about some really serious stuff before my treatment.

"How can we arrange this treatment stuff so I can go to Mexico for New Years and be with my family?"  I explained I had reserved the place in June, had tickets and that the families were coming from London and Angles Camp to see us.  The doctor knew how important this reunion was to me and figured a day on one side or the other would not hurt.

The trip was great!  We got to see the London family which we only saw via Facetime since covid.  The grandchildren got to enjoy each other,  we had some great conversations, activities, and food.  Oh yes, we got a professional photographer to get a family picture --to replace the one with only two grandchildren.

This trip brought together three generations of our family aged 9 to 90 and created some great memories for all.  Yes, I am An Expert in Optimism and yes I CAN.

Adventure Travel Agent Advisor

People usually bring something home from their adventures away.  It might be some  souvenirs or a bag of dirty laundry.  Me?  I brought back knowledge of  how to use my smart phone to make my travels go more smoothly and add joy to everyday life.

I am sharing this knowledge with you in hopes they will help you feel more secure in exploring new, unfamiliar locations. They are free, so take all you like--there are enough for everyone.

1. Unless you are fluent in the local languages, I suggest you add google translate to your cell phones. It will translate what you say into the local language. (We learned about this from a cab driver in Shanghai.)

2. Maps.me: offline GPS navigation can be very helpful. (We learned this in Venice from an Australian tourist.)

3. UBER and Lyft. They seem to be everywhere and work well to get about on your own. (London trips and so many after that.) There are other point specific apps, also.

4. Check with your phone company about out of country plans. I use T-Mobile; seldom do I need to talk ($0.25 per min) but the text and wifi are included.

5. What's app is great. I use it a great deal with out of country clients and consultants. When I am in Mexico, I use it for calling local businesses as well as family/friends at home. (Learned how to use this from a supplier in Guatemala).Skype was what I used prior to the smart phone.

I share these because they have made our travels much smoother than when we started our adventures-so very long ago.

Give me a call to guide you to your next adventure. Mew

Traveling creates lifelong learning adventure.  We bring home memories, photos, and a souvenir or two; I brought back knowledge of  how to use my smart phone to make my travels go more smoothly and add joy to everyday life.  Don't forgot to use these suggestions in preparation for your next out of country trip or around your own hometown.

1. Unless you are fluent in the local languages, I suggest you add google translate to your cell phones. It will translate what you say into the local language. (We learned about this from a cab driver in Shanghai.)

I share these because they have made our travels much smoother than when we started our adventures-so very long ago.

Holiday Travel Agent Advisor

Have you ever felt so locked in to your everyday routine that you just feel like shouting,"I DONT CARE. WHERE, I JUST NEED TO GO!"???

Being a dreamer and planner, I have a way to fix that!  I take into consideration the following things.

1.What gaps are there in my personal calendar? how many days canI be away?

2.Do I have clients traveling who might need to contact me via What's app?

3.How much money do I have to spend on this adventure?

4. How far can I comfortably go for the number of days?

5. Is there availability ?

Next I calculate my formula, keeping in mind I do not always be in travel mode--unless it is on a cruise shlp.  Following the formula, I get a map of the area I could cover and a set of darts.  Yes, my decision becomes darts or pin-the-tail.

As Inspector Clouseau would say, "The mystery is solve-ed."  Destination decided, I make my plans to travel and relax away from my very busy desk.

Let me help you get away from your everyday routine.  A short trip away from daily life can refresh and revitalize.  Send me an email, text, or call so i an get you on your rest break.  If I am away, please leave a message and I will return your call.

BTW: Yes you can go to Europe in 3 or 4 days and still relax.

AMTRAK and Eurostar are both well know train companies.  Train travel in the USA was common place prior to the mass production of automobiles and the later development of air travel.  Europe has retained a great deal of its rail service and. with time made it faster and more efficient.

Historically, trains were seemed to have been almost everywhere.  In the movies who can forget Butch Cassidy , Von Ryan's Express, or Harry Potter's train travel?

Personally, I love to travel by train.  I have done it in the US, Canada, UK, Europe, South America, and Japan.  In China, I have only done the short MegLev from Shanghai to the airport and back at extreme high speeds.  I was  recently informed by a former diplomat that the historic Panama Canal train is running on part of that route.

Recently I received an eye-popping safari adventure in Africa.  The refurbished train is elegant and is a perfect way to see the countryside and animals on that continent.

While in South Korea, I visited an completed but unused train station.  The vision is that one day it will be the start or finish of travel from Spain to Seoul.  Now that  route would be a sight to behold. . . What diversity!

I know you have been thinking about taking a train adventure; now is the time to do it. Give me a call, a text, or send an e-mail and lets get you on the rails of adventure.

San Miguel De Allende is one of the most magical places to travel to as it is quite the artist colony.

I spent six weeks roaming the streets during one summer vacation.  Each day I woke to the many bells--at least one from each church, that announced each hour.

The locals accepted new comers and greeted us like old friends at the central jardin during the day and in the evening.

Delicious food and interesting libations were the fare.  The town of San Miguel de Allende  did not disappoint.

Panama and Costa Rica Trip

Reviewed By Carolyn - Sacramento, CA | Traveled to Costa Rica | Central America

My husband and I wanted to plan a trip to Panama and Costa Rica but we didn't know were to start. Marian asked us many good questions, including our budget, and was able to reserve hotels for us that were perfectly suited for our adventure. In both Panama and Costa Rica, she recommended places to go and when. She also told us places in which we should steer clear, which was much appreciated! Months later we wanted to set up a Viking cruise and she was able to assist with those arrangements as well.

MARIAN WATTEL RESPONDED

"Thank you so much for the great review. It is gratifying to know all of the questions I asked were able to help find just the right fit for you. Your pictures were enjoyed and I know your memories will live on. Hoping to have you share more of that outstanding Viking choice, also. Welcome home! Mew"

Perfectly chosen.
