Texas covers nearly 268,600 square miles, and few states pack in more geographic contrast: desert mountains in the far west, spring-fed Hill Country rivers in the center, subtropical coastline in the south, and sprawling metros anchoring the north and east. Big Bend and the Davis Mountains sit along the Rio Grande in West Texas, San Antonio and Austin anchor the Hill Country, South Padre Island and the Rio Grande Valley run along the Gulf Coast border, and Dallas and Houston serve as the state's major urban hubs.

The region's history runs deep. Indigenous peoples, including the Comanche, Apache, Coahuiltecan, and Karankawa, were its earliest inhabitants. Spanish missionaries arrived in the early 1700s, establishing missions that still stand in San Antonio today, including the Alamo, recognized together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Texas Revolution of 1835–36 and the later Mexican-American War fixed the Rio Grande as the border with Mexico. German and Czech immigrants settled the Hill Country in the mid-1800s, founding towns like Fredericksburg and New Braunfels, while a Mexican-American culture predating statehood remains central to the Rio Grande Valley. The 1901 Spindletop oil strike near Beaumont built Houston into a global energy center, Dallas grew as a banking and trade hub, and Austin developed into a center for government, music, and technology.

West Texas holds some of the state's most remote outdoor terrain. Big Bend National Park offers backcountry hiking and camping in the Chisos Mountains, canoeing and rafting through Santa Elena and Boquillas Canyons on the Rio Grande, and some of the darkest skies in the continental U.S. The nearby Davis Mountains offer hiking and camping at Davis Mountains State Park, and McDonald Observatory hosts public star parties and telescope viewing for astronomy tourism.

In the Hill Country, San Antonio and Austin offer hiking and camping at Enchanted Rock, Government Canyon, Pedernales Falls, Inks Lake State Park, and Lost Maples State Natural Area, along with tubing, kayaking, and canoeing on the Guadalupe, Comal, and Frio Rivers, and river camping at Garner State Park. Austin adds the Barton Creek Greenbelt, Lady Bird Lake paddling, and McKinney Falls State Park. The Hill Country is also the only place on Earth where the golden-cheeked warbler breeds, nesting exclusively in mature Ashe juniper-oak woodlands each spring; it is the only bird species with a breeding range confined entirely to Texas, making it a signature draw for birders visiting the region.

Along the coast, South Padre Island and the Rio Grande Valley offer flats kayaking, fishing, and sea turtle viewing, alongside some of the best birding in North America at the World Birding Center network and Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. Texas sits where the Central and Mississippi flyways converge along the Gulf Coast, and each spring and fall, millions of migrating birds pass through, with exhausted flocks sometimes "falling out" onto the coast after crossing the Gulf. That convergence of flyways and habitat diversity, from coastal wetlands to desert canyons, is why Texas draws birders from around the world during migration season. Dallas and Houston offer their own outdoor access: Dallas's Katy Trail and White Rock Lake support hiking, biking, and paddling, while Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park and Memorial Park offer trails and kayaking, with birding nearby at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge and the Bolivar Peninsula.

Museums, zoos, and gardens round out the region's cultural offerings. San Antonio pairs its River Walk and mission trail with the San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio Botanical Garden, and the Witte Museum, alongside a strong Tex-Mex tradition. Austin's live music runs from historic dance halls to SXSW and Austin City Limits, alongside breakfast tacos and barbecue. Dallas offers the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, a major arts district, and the Deep Ellum music scene. Houston, one of the most diverse cities in the country, pairs the Houston Zoo, Houston Museum of Natural Science, and Museum District with Space Center Houston and an internationally recognized food scene.

Together, these areas span desert mountains, spring-fed rivers, coastal wetlands, and major cities, offering a wide range of outdoor adventure alongside deep regional history and culture.

California Destination Expert

To truly understand California, you have to look beyond the post-cards and dive into its dramatic natural diversity. Having explored its vast coastline, ancient forests, and legendary urban centers, my passion for the Golden State is rooted in its contrasting landscapes and the raw spirit of exploration that defines it. From the mist-shrouded cliffs of the north to the sun-drenched beaches of the south, California offers an unmatched canvas for hikers, divers, wine enthusiasts, and travelers seeking immersive, purpose-built journeys.

San Francisco: A vibrant cultural epicenter, San Francisco is beautifully defined by its iconic landmarks, maritime history, and world-class culinary scene. A perfect day centers on its distinct coastal energy: walking the lively waterfront, exploring historic neighborhoods, and absorbing the city's artistic drive. Beyond the classic views of the Golden Gate, the city serves as a magnificent base for active travelers. You can kayak the waters of the bay, hike the rugged coastal paths of the Presidio, or venture just across the bridge to the towering old-growth redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument, a sanctuary for quiet exploration and premier birding.

Mendocino & The Lost Coast: Where the pavement gives way to dramatic ocean bluffs, Mendocino offers a rugged, untouched look at California's wild northern coast. This region is a haven for travelers looking to slow down and connect deeply with nature. Here, days are spent hiking through the coastal redwoods of Russian Gulch State Park, paddling down the pristine Big River estuary, or tracking marine wildlife from the cliffs. Further north lies Redwood National and State Parks, home to the tallest trees on Earth and a sanctuary where Roosevelt elk roam and bald eagles soar over wild, empty beaches. It is a spectacular landscape for multi-day hiking and remote backcountry camping.

Wine Country -- Sonoma, Napa, Yountville & Healdsburg: Just inland from the coast lies California’s prestigious wine and culinary heartland. From the rustic, laid-back charm of Sonoma and the vibrant plaza of Healdsburg to the world-class estates of Napa Valley and the Michelin-starred dining of Yountville, this region perfectly balances outdoor activity with premium comfort. Between private, estate tastings of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, you can cycle down quiet vineyard lanes, float above the valley in a hot air balloon, or hike through the rolling hills. It is an essential stop for travelers looking to pair active days with exceptional farm-to-table culinary experiences.

Yosemite National Park & The High Sierra: Rising high into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite stands as a majestic monument to the power of glaciers and time. Witnessing the sheer granite faces of El Capitan and Half Dome, hearing the roar of thunderous waterfalls, and walking among the ancient giant sequoias of Mariposa Grove is a transformational experience. Beyond Yosemite, the High Sierra corridor opens up to incredible wilderness networks, including Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, home to the largest living trees on Earth and dramatic, deep-canyon topography. Whether your style is an authentic, multi-day backcountry trek, a guided rock climbing adventure, or winding down at a premium mountain lodge, this alpine playground provides an exhilarating escape.

San Diego: Anchoring California’s southern border, San Diego perfectly marries sophisticated urban culture with a vibrant, outdoor-centric lifestyle. Globally renowned for its expansive, sun-soaked beaches and laid-back energy, it is a premier destination for active coastal travel. The region offers world-class surfing, coastal hiking along the sandstone cliffs of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and exceptional sea kayaking through the sea caves of La Jolla. For wildlife enthusiasts, the surrounding marine protected areas offer incredible opportunities to spot migrating whales, sea lions, and diverse coastal bird species.

Why Explore California With Me? My deep familiarity with these diverse corridors allows me to design custom-built, seamless itineraries that avoid mass-tourism bottlenecks and focus on high-quality, immersive experiences. Whether you want a technical dive or surf trip, a custom wildlife-tracking route through national parks, a luxury wine and culinary tour, or a seamless family adventure from the mountains to the sea, I can handle the intricate logistics so you can focus entirely on the journey.

To truly understand Oregon, you have to leave the pavement behind. Having spent countless miles exploring its rugged interior and majestic coastlines, my passion for this state is deeply rooted in its gorgeous vistas, dramatic trail networks, and the spirit of adventure that defines its culture. From the vibrant green canopy of the northern rainforests to the snow-capped peaks, this Pacific Northwest crown jewel offers an unmatched canvas for hikers, glampers, birders, wildlife enthusiasts, and families seeking immersive, slow-travel journeys.

The Columbia River Gorge & Hood River: Cutting a dramatic channel through the Cascade Mountains, the Columbia River Gorge is a masterclass in natural history. Hood River serves as the perfect basecamp, a vibrant community known globally for its windsurfing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, craft cideries, and farm-to-table culinary scene.Exploring the Gorge means moving past vertical basalt cliffs, moss-draped old-growth Douglas firs, and an astonishing concentration of breathtaking waterfalls. Whether you are hiking the historic Columbia River Highway segments, foraging for wild mushrooms, or taking on challenging climbs up to wildflower-strewn ridgelines, the landscape offers a deep connection to the land.

Mount Hood: Rising 11,249 feet above sea level, Mount Hood stands as Oregon's highest peak and a dramatic year-round playground. Its subalpine meadows, glacial ridges, and craggy volcanic valleys provide an exhilarating high-altitude escape. In the warmer months, traversing sections of the legendary Timberline Trail exposes you to chiseled wilderness and roaring rivers, while winter transforms the mountain into a world-class destination for skiing and snow sports. The surrounding national forest is a haven for wilderness lovers, birders, and anglers, offering the perfect terrain to unplug and breathe in the crisp alpine air.

The Willamette Valley: Just south of the city lies the Willamette Valley, the pastoral heart of Oregon’s agricultural and wine world. Nestled between the Cascade Range and the Coast Range, this region is globally renowned for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and innovative sustainable farming practices. A journey through the valley offers a slower pace of travel. Here, days are spent tasting exceptional wines at boutique, family-owned vineyards, cycling along quiet country roads, and enjoying meals crafted entirely from ingredients harvested just miles away.

The Northern Coast & Tillamook: Oregon’s coast is a wild, untamed ecosystem, strictly protected by the historic Beach Bill to ensure public access for all. Starting in the north, Cannon Beach pairs a sophisticated coastal arts culture with dramatic sea stacks, headlined by iconic Haystack Rock, a thriving marine sanctuary where you can spot nesting Tufted Puffins in the summer months. Moving south into Tillamook, the landscape shifts into deep dairy valleys and coastal rainforests. Family-friendly highlights abound here, from sampling fresh cheese and ice cream at the famous Tillamook Creamery to exploring the interactive exhibits at the Tillamook Forest Center, which features a 250-foot pedestrian suspension bridge over the Wilson River. For outdoor enthusiasts, the trails at Cape Lookout and Cape Meares push right to the edge of massive cliffs, offering hiking paths suspended high above the crashing Pacific surf, while the gateway of Coos Bay further south leads to hidden salt marshes, kayaking estuaries, and isolated shorelines perfect for whale watching.

Portland: Nicknamed the City of Roses, Portland bridges urban sophistication with wild spaces, defined by its independent spirit, world-class culinary innovations, and dedication to environmental stewardship. Right within the city limits lies Forest Park, one of the largest urban forest reserves in the United States, offering over 80 miles of single-track paths like the winding Wildwood Trail. For families and urban explorers, the city features iconic cultural and educational stops. You can spend an afternoon discovering wildlife conservation at the Oregon Zoo, walking among thousands of blooms at the International Rose Test Garden, or engaging in hands-on science experiments at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) along the waterfront.

Why Explore Oregon With Me? Oregon requires a strategist who understands the delicate balance between high-end comfort and rugged capability. We have been dying to visit India for birding, and Sherry make that dream happen for us. Flew into Kochi and were picked up by a driver she arranged to take us two hours to the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in the Western Ghats foothills. Exceptional Endemic Birding in Colombia's Sierra Nevada

Reviewed By Bird Fanatics - San Antonio, TX | Traveled to Colombia | South America

As our travel advisor, Sherry put together a dream birding itinerary to Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta that far exceeded our high expectations. Traveling from the lush foothills of Minca high up into the cloud forests of the ProAves El Dorado Reserve gave us front-row seats to spectacular endemic species, including the rare Santa Marta Parakeet. Mountain logistics on those rugged roads can be daunting, but our private 4x4 transfers, eco-lodge reservations, and top-tier local naturalists were coordinated flawlessly. It was easily one of the most seamless and rewarding wildlife journeys we have ever taken.

SHERRY WYNN RESPONDED

"Colombia is such an amazing place to visit. I'm delighted to have played a part in your birding adventure! Looking forward to working with you again."

Perfect Texas Hill Country escape

Reviewed By road warrior - Minneapolis | Traveled to Kerrville | Texas | USA

Escaping the cold winter in Minnesota was the goal and Sherry helped us plan the perfect Texas outdoor weekend with a mix of rugged hiking and relaxing river time. We climate the granite dome at Enchanted Rock in the morning, followed by peaceful afternoon kayak floats down the Frio River. The glamping cabin she found for us put us right in the heart of nature and included a romantic outdoor shower plus and a fire pit for stargazing. It was the perfect escape that we will definitely repeat. Let Sherry book your trip! You won't regret it.

Epic Columbia Gorge River Birthday trip

Reviewed By Stars@Night - Austin TX | Traveled to Hood River | Oregon | USA

We brought a group of 20 close friends together for an active 40th birthday weekend in the Pacific Northwest, and it exceeded every expectation. Sherry set up group whitewater rafting for us on the White Salmon River, organized scenic hikes near Multnomah Falls, and booked a private craft brewery tour in Hood River. The large boutique lodge they selected served as the ideal basecamp for relaxing after long days outdoors. It was high-energy, perfectly paced, and totally hassle-free.

World-class kelp forest Scuba Diving in Channel Islands

Reviewed By DiveTogetherStayTogether - Indianapolis, IN | Traveled to Santa Barbara | California | USA

Our dive club ran out of time for planning our spring liveaboard trip to the Channel Islands and Sherry handled every detail flawlessly. She secured top-tier dive charters to explore the dramatic archways, kelp forests, and sea cave ecosystems surrounding Santa Cruz and Anacapa islands. We saw sea lions, giant black sea bass, and incredible macro marine life on every single dive. The boat crew, rentals, and park permits were all taken care of in advance. Highly recommend Sherry as a scuba dive travel advisor

Glamping & stargazing in SoCal

Reviewed By happyclamcamper - Tacoma WA | Traveled to California | USA

Before this trip, I thought that camping means sacrificing comfort. Sherry changed my mind. We enjoyed a gorgeous glamping setup including comfy king size beds, private chef outdoor meals, and star gazing telescope sessions led by a real astronomer! We even had a private guide lead us through secluded boulder-scrambling routes and a hidden palm oasis far away from tourists. Absolute killer vacay!

Stress-free Lake Tahoe adventure for the whole family

Reviewed By StephCapGA - Atlanta GA | Traveled to Lake Tahoe | California | USA

Planning a graduation celebration for 18 people with mixed interests was stressful, but with Sherry's guidance, we selected a balanced itinerary that kept everyone thrilled. The younger crowd spent their mornings trail running and sea kayaking near Emerald Bay, while others enjoyed gentle guided hikes and birding through the pines. We stayed in a massive, high-end mountain lodge that accommodated our whole group comfortably for evening BBQs and star gazing. Every single person, from the teenagers to the grandparents, had the time of their lives.

Our favorite Trail Running trip so far.

Reviewed By TrailRunnerNC - Raleigh, NC | Traveled to Bend | Oregon | USA

When our race was canceled due to wild fires, my training partner and I sent Sherry a short-notice request for a high-energy, technical trail running outing. What she delivered was an incredible route package. We spent four days running scenic, challenging loops through Smith Rock and along the Cascade Lakes scenic trail network, complete with custom elevation profiles and trail maps. The accommodations were strategically picked right near key trailheads with great recovery amenities like on-site hot tubs and ice baths. It was an athlete's dream vacation from start to finish.

East Texas Kayaking and Birding

Reviewed By Eagle Watcher - Cheyenne, WY | Traveled to South Padre Island | Texas | USA

As an avid birder, I am always skeptical of general travel planners, but Sherry clearly knows wildlife logistics inside and out. She booked us into gorgeous waterfront cabins and connected us with elite local naturalists for early-morning kayak tours through the moss-draped cypress bayous of Caddo Lake. We added dozens of new species to our life lists before heading down to South Padre Island for coastal birdwatching along the migratory corridors. The entire journey was peaceful, deeply educational, and immaculately timed.

Flawless Group Desert Expedition to Big Bend

Reviewed By StarsAtNight - Milwaukee, WI | Traveled to Texas | USA

As the trip coordinator for our 22-member university alumni outdoors club, I needed a complex multi-activity itinerary in remote West Texas. As our travel advisor, Sherry mapped out an incredible week featuring guided river rafting through Santa Elena Canyon, primitive desert camping under world-class dark skies, and day hikes across the Chisos Mountains. Managing gear, park entry logistics, and group meals for a crowd this size usually drives me crazy, but everything ran like clockwork. Our club is already asking when we can book our next trip!
