Explore South AmericaAfter arriving from Auckland, I immediately sensed that Rotorua had evolved since my last visit.
My first stop was the newly opened Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa, an experience that beautifully combines wellness with Māori culture and storytelling. Rather than simply soaking in thermal waters, guests are guided through a thoughtfully curated journey connecting them to the natural elements and traditions of the region.
It was the perfect introduction to what would become a recurring theme throughout my stay: experiences that feel authentic, meaningful, and deeply connected to place. That evening, I settled into the beautiful lakeside setting of On The Point Lodge, where peaceful views across the water provided a tranquil welcome to the region.
Rotorua, New Zealand
Some travel experiences are enjoyable. Others stay with you forever.
One of the most memorable evenings of my trip was a nighttime glowworm kayaking adventure on one of Rotorua’s lakes. Under a sky filled with stars, our small group paddled across calm waters illuminated only by moonlight and red headlamps.
Our guides led us into hidden caves where thousands of glowworms transformed the darkness into what looked like a living galaxy. As if that wasn’t magical enough, we were treated to hot chocolate while floating quietly on the water beneath the glowworms.
Moments like these are difficult to describe because they feel almost unreal while they’re happening. It was one of those rare travel experiences where everyone fell silent, simply appreciating the beauty around them.
The evening concluded with a relaxing soak at Polynesian Spa, proving that adventure and relaxation can coexist perfectly in Rotorua.
Rotorua has long been considered the cultural heart of New Zealand, and nowhere was that more evident than during my time exploring the region’s Māori experiences.
I spent time learning about Pounamu (New Zealand jade) and its importance within Māori culture, observing skilled artisans transform raw stone into treasured carvings that often become family heirlooms.
One of the highlights of my visit was attending Te Pā Tū’s Tū Te Ihi – Winter Harvest Matariki Celebration. The evening combined storytelling, traditional games, cultural performances, and a delicious hāngī feast shared family-style.
What impressed me most was how immersive and welcoming the experience felt. Rather than simply observing a performance, guests become participants in a celebration of culture, history, and community.
These experiences offer travelers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand and the traditions that continue to shape the nation today.
One of the most inspiring parts of my visit was spending time at the National Kiwi Hatchery.
The kiwi is one of New Zealand’s most recognizable symbols, yet many visitors don’t realize how vulnerable these unique birds are in the wild. Learning about the hatchery’s conservation efforts and seeing firsthand the dedication of the staff working to protect future generations of kiwi was both educational and inspiring.
Experiences like this remind us that travel can be about more than sightseeing. It can create a deeper appreciation for the people and organizations working tirelessly to preserve the wildlife and ecosystems that make a destination special.
If I had to choose a single experience that defined this trip, it would be my day exploring Lake Rotoiti aboard Pure Cruise’s remarkable Airstream Project vessel.
Anyone who knows me knows that I feel most at home on the water, but this experience was something truly extraordinary.
Cruising across crystal-clear waters surrounded by native forest, listening to birdsong echo from the shoreline, and discovering hidden coves accessible only by boat created an overwhelming sense of peace and connection.
One of the highlights was visiting the secluded Manupirua Hot Springs, where naturally heated mineral waters bubble up beside the lake’s edge. Arriving by boat felt like discovering a secret oasis hidden from the rest of the world.
Between glowworm caves, hidden swimming holes, native wildlife, and stunning scenery, this experience easily ranks among my personal Top 10 travel experiences of all time.
No visit to Rotorua would be complete without experiencing the geothermal activity that has shaped the region for centuries.
At Hell’s Gate, I explored bubbling mud pools, steaming landscapes, geothermal waterfalls, and therapeutic mud baths that showcased the raw power of the earth beneath our feet. Walking through the reserve felt like stepping onto another planet.
Equally impressive was my visit to the Redwoods Treewalk. Suspended high above the forest floor among towering California Redwoods, the network of bridges offers a completely different perspective of the forest.
The experience reminded me that Rotorua’s appeal extends far beyond its geothermal attractions. Lakes, forests, walking trails, and natural landscapes now play an equally important role in the visitor experience.
As a travel advisor, one of the most valuable parts of my visit was experiencing a variety of accommodations and attractions firsthand.
From the lakeside luxury of On The Point Lodge to the stylish atmosphere of Regent of Rotorua and the breathtaking lakefront setting of Solitaire Lodge, each property offered something distinctly different.
The same was true of many of the activities I experienced throughout the week. Some travelers seek relaxation and wellness, while others prioritize adventure, culture, wildlife, or luxury. Experiencing multiple options allows me to better match each client with the experiences that best fit their interests, travel style, and goals.
While many travelers spend only one or two nights, I recommend at least three to four days to fully experience Rotorua’s geothermal attractions, cultural experiences, lakes, forests, wellness offerings, and wildlife encounters.
