Your Escape Begins with Our Story

Royal Caribbean was born in 1969 when hospitality entrepreneur Ed Stephan joined forces with three Norwegian shipping companies to create a cruise line unlike anything the world had seen. The name "Royal Caribbean" was chosen deliberately, the connection to royalty reflecting the high standards of service guests could expect. Their first ship, the Song of Norway, set sail from Miami in November 1970, and Royal Caribbean quickly made history as the first cruise line to design ships specifically for warm-weather, year-round Caribbean cruising.

From those early days, Royal Caribbean has never stopped pushing boundaries. The 1999 launch of Voyager of the Seas, featuring an ice rink, rock climbing wall, and indoor promenade, was the first ship that truly felt more like a resort than a vessel. That spirit of innovation continues today with the record-breaking Icon-class ships, cementing Royal Caribbean's place as the boldest name in cruising.
