It explores one of Australia’s most remote and spectacular regions. Discover the Kimberley’s red cliffs, turquoise waters, and ancient landscapes on Western Australia’s rugged coastline.
Find hidden waterfalls and amazing wildlife along the way.
Kimberley region of Western Australia
As part of a travel advisor educational experience, I joined the Paspaley Pearl expedition ship for 4 days of its 10-day Kimberley itinerary. While my time onboard was shorter than the full voyage, it offered an incredible glimpse into why expedition cruising has become one of the most sought-after ways to explore this remarkable region.
What immediately stood out was the sense of discovery. This isn’t traditional cruising. No crowded ports or tourist attractions exist. Instead, every day brings new adventures accessible only by small expedition vessels and zodiac landings.
One of my first introductions to the Kimberley was the breathtaking Buccaneer Archipelago, a collection of more than 800 islands scattered across pristine waters.
Buccaneer Archipelago
Traveling by zodiac allowed us to navigate narrow channels, explore hidden beaches, and encounter wildlife in its natural habitat. Green sea turtles surfaced beside our boat. Stingrays glided under crystal-clear water. Thousands of seabirds filled the skies above the Lacepede Islands.
The sheer remoteness of the region creates an experience unlike anywhere else in Australia. There are moments when you genuinely feel as though you’ve discovered a hidden corner of the world.
Few natural wonders have impressed me as much as Horizontal Falls.
Horizontal Falls, Collier Bay
Located within Collier Bay, this phenomenon occurs when enormous tidal movements force seawater through narrow gorges, creating powerful standing waves and whirlpools. Watching the ocean surge through these gaps is both mesmerizing and humbling.
Horizontal Falls
Experiencing Horizontal Falls from both sea level and later from the air by seaplane provided two completely different perspectives. From above, the scale of this incredible landscape becomes even more apparent, revealing the immense forces that have shaped the Kimberley over millions of years.
If there was one experience that completely exceeded my expectations, it was Montgomery Reef.
At low tide, water drains off the reef in spectacular cascading waterfalls, exposing an ecosystem that appears to rise directly from the ocean. The transformation is so dramatic that many travelers describe it as watching the earth breathe.
Montgomery Reef
What makes Montgomery Reef especially unique is that it is primarily an algae reef rather than a traditional coral reef. Throughout the day, we observed sea turtles, birdlife, and marine ecosystems thriving within this constantly changing environment.
Returning at high tide just hours later revealed an entirely different landscape, demonstrating the extraordinary tidal movements that define life in the Kimberley.
While the Kimberley’s landscapes are undoubtedly the stars of the journey, the onboard experience aboard the Paspaley Pearl was equally impressive.
The intimate size of the Kimberley Expedition Cruise created opportunities for meaningful conversations, educational presentations, and genuine connections with fellow travelers. Days were spent exploring remote wilderness, while evenings brought sunset cocktails, exceptional dining, and storytelling under the stars.
One of the things I appreciated most was how expedition cruising combines adventure, education, conservation, and comfort. Travelers aren’t simply sightseeing. They’re gaining a deeper understanding of the region’s geology, wildlife, Indigenous heritage, and environmental significance.
Our expedition began and ended in the fascinating town of Broome, a destination worthy of exploration in its own right.
Broome, Australia
From learning about the region’s pearling history and visiting the Japanese Cemetery to seeing ancient dinosaur footprints preserved along the coastline, Broome offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Of course, no visit to Broome would be complete without experiencing the iconic camel procession along Cable Beach at sunset.
Watching the camels silhouetted against the vibrant orange sky was the perfect ending to an unforgettable Kimberley adventure.
The Kimberley is a remote wilderness region in northern Western Australia. It is known for dramatic coastlines, ancient landscapes, waterfalls, wildlife, and rich Indigenous cultural heritage.
